Caramelized apples are a dish that has a complex balance of sweetness and sourness, with warm spicy notes if spices are added.

Apples roasted with sugar turn into soft and juicy slices with a caramelized crust, making them not only sweet but also incredibly flavorful. The texture of the apples becomes tender and soft, with a slight pull of caramel enveloping each slice.

Such apples can be served as a dessert on their own, garnished with whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.

They can also serve as a wonderful addition to pancakes, waffles, French toast, oatmeal and other breakfast foods. They also pair well with cheese like brie and camembert or even with meat dishes, adding a sweet and savory accent.

And I made this beautiful apple crumble with them.

Preparation of apples and cooking

Peel 2 apples, cut into quarters and cut out the core. Cut each quarter into 4-5 slices.

Heat 50 g (1 ¾ oz) of unsalted butter in a wide frying pan over a medium heat.

Add spices to taste, I have black and white pepper, cinnamon and cloves.

Place apples in a single layer and cook for 3 minutes. Then stir and cook for another 3 minutes.

Add 50 g (¼ cup) of sugar and stir again.

Cook until caramelized, stirring the apples occasionally, about 5 minutes. If it starts to burn – reduce the heat, if on the contrary caramelization does not start – increase it.

Remove from the heat and set aside.
